Testing your creek
-
Is your creek healthy?
-
Is the restoration of the creek helping the flora and fauna?
-
What do we need to do to TAKE ACTION?
To help answer these and many other questions, Hilder Road State school was fortunate to create a partnership with SAS Laboratories (Urban Utilities Queensland). The Year 5 and 6 students monitored the water quality of Fish Creek with Water Quality Scientists every month in 2017. See the results. The students worked alongside the scientists to analyse the quality of the water and ecology of the creek. The students hoped to gain some knowledge of both short term and long term trends and use this real-life information to work out what action they needed to do to help their creek.
You can do this too!
Teachers: keep learning local by using the Year 5: HASS (Geography) unit plan that incorporates water quality testing and empowers students to take action for their creek (an alternate unit to C2C Year 5 HASS: Unit 1).
You can do it, too
Anyone or any group, including schools, community groups or individuals can follow our 5 steps and use the resources provided to check the health of their local creek and then decide how to take action. By assessing the health of YOUR creek, you can tailor what action is required for your area and therefore target it better.
